Volunteer Crew – DD-850

Subj:   October 2006 Field Day

The attendance for the October Field Day aboard USS JOSEPH P. KENNEDY JR. (DD-850) from October 17th through the 22nd drew fifty-one Volunteers, including four first time attendees. We also had two ladies join in with our efforts. Bonnie Parker assisting her husband Chuck on the Bridge Wing project and first timer Emily Carr assisting her dad Jim Carr and others in the needle gun, preparation of the Port Side forward.

Another first timer was Dave Paplow who has volunteered aboard the USS THE SULLIVANS (DD-537) in Buffalo and made the trip down from that area to join the KENNEDY Crew.

Yet another first timer was welder/steamfitter Tom Patchell who was aboard with former crewmember Tom Kallman.

Returning after a ten year or so hiatus was Jim McGuiness – who readily joined in the chipping and needling gun effort on the Main Deck and Mt 51. It was certainly good to see Jim return.

With the weather not cooperating fully on Friday with intermittent showers, many inside tasks were addressed. Although some outside work was attempted the rain kept the crew at a disadvantage.

Unfortunately, because of those weather conditions – full attention to the Main Deck area – Port side – just after of Mt. 51, could only be addressed on Saturday. The task of prepping the overhead in that area will be time consuming. However – the first stage of addressing that area has begun and we hope to continue that effort in upcoming Field Days – weather permitting.

Some of the tasks accomplished over this past week – though maybe small in wording – took much effort in planning and preparation. But the results were still significant in ensuring safety around the ship and our ongoing efforts towards maintenance, preservation and restroration.

The acquisition of tools and supplies to continue the restoration and preservation of JPK is greatly appreciated. Let it not be said - they were bought but not used. We shall be using all if it as we continue during the Mini Field Days.

After years of effort – the main cause of the electrical grounds was isolated and rectified. This has been an area of great concern to Ed Zajkowski due to the damage this has been causing aboard JPK with the electrolysis. This was a major find.

As always – this list of accomplishments is only as accurate as the information provided. There are always small but important details that are not accounted for but add to the overall effort of the Volunteers.

Should any questions arise – Please feel free to contact me.
