May 2007 Field Day Report

 All Hands,

Some of you are new to this email report and are representatives of Sumner and Gearing class destroyer associations.  This is a periodic report on the restoration of the FRAM 1 Gearing class destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. DD850 that is currently berthed in
Fall River, MA.  We hope that you find this interesting and could possibly pass this along to your shipmates.  We need your support in preserving this GEARING class destroyer and welcome any help and interest that our sister ships (both Gearing and our close siblings of the SUMNER class) can provide.  You also may find that some of your shipmates are members of our volunteer crew already or that holding your reunion aboard KENNEDY DD850 is a terrific trip back in time.

It was unfortunate that we had to use the Foul Weather Bill for our May Major field day but over 50 volunteers reported aboard USS JOSEPH P. KENNEDY JR. DD850 despite the rain, cold, and wind.   Much work, comradery, and services were provided to the ship and crew during this past weekend and we were extremely pleased at the amount of accomplishments and the "family" atmosphere that existed aboard.   It seems that it is more of a family reunion when we get together than a work party but the upkeep of this destroyer is a major part of what we do.

Interior Communications: (Reported by Dave Margerum IC2 JP Kennedy Volunteer Crew)

"Another great weekend with good Navy fellowship and great chow.
The outstanding IC Team performed up to our normal standard of excellence. A long standing problem with the 2JV was corrected and we had a lot of laughs along the way. Our team consisted of IC Strikers Bill Smith, Bill Golding, Neil Bogart, and your intrepid Lead IC, Dave Margerum. This is now an "All Star" IC Team. Now if only I could get some of those Strikers promoted!!!!!!!!!! They are starting to listen better to their leader so the future does look better."

1. Trouble shot the 2JV and corrected a long standing problem of getting the Shipfitter's Shop connected and low volume. Note: The circuit now connects the CPO Quarters, IC Room, Engineering Office and the SF Shop.
2. Repaired Sound Powered Phones.
3. Checked operation of the 16mm projector and certified it for duty.
4. Attended a training film in the IC Room on "FOG". Bill Smith
and I are now experts on Ground Fog and Advection Fog. We tried
to pass on our knowledge of fog to other crew mates (Lee Jones,
Mike Sukeena) but we found little interest. We (IC Team) will
continue to try to raise the knowledge of the crew on
important issues of the day. This is why we are IC men and this
   is our commitment to excellence.
5. Made contact with the Crew in the CIC on the 21MC. It worked
   loud and clear.

Field Day in Review:

1.  Bill Rains (USS Newman K. Perry DD883) came to our May field day all the way from
Oklahoma.  He worked in CIC during the weekend to help us jump start this new effort.

2.  The USS Douglas H. Fox DD779 crew at the May field day had the largest group with 9 volunteers.  They came from areas such as
Fla, NJ, NY, and PA.  Most of these men served in B4 After Engine Room together aboard DD779 and worked the whole weekend cleaning up, painting, and restoring that space on KENNEDY.  We also would like to thank them for the generous $500 donation from the DD779 Association towards our ASROC Restoration Project.

3.  Of the dozens of museum ships around the world, the Historic Naval Ships Association distributes 8 awards to exceptional volunteers and staff aboard these ships.  For 2006, two of our KENNEDY volunteers were chosen to be stool out for their achievements aboard USS J.P. KENNEDY Jr. DD850.  They are:

A. Maury Crotteau, Bos'n Marvin Curry Award
" It is awarded to a staff person of a Fleet Member organization for exceptional service over at least a five-year period in the areas of interpretation, maintenance, preservation or restoration. Preference shall be given to a non-salaried employee or volunteer. The recipient should have consistently demonstrated competency in his or her field, a commitment to excellence and a strong love for the Fleet Member's ship"

Maury was awarded this for his excellence in the field of radio, electronics, and diesel engine work aboard KENNEDY since the late 1970s.  Maury joined the Navy in the late 40s aboard the USS Harwood DD861 and left the service as a Chief Radioman.

B. Edward Zajkowski, Historic Naval Ship Maintenance Award
"This award is for a Fleet Member staff or volunteer person who has provided exemplary work on a daily or part time toward the long term maintenance and preservation of a historic naval vessel and/or toward the proper exhibition of that vessel to the general public."

Ed was awarded this for his excellence in the field of preservation and electrical system work aboard KENNEDY since the late 1970s.  Ed joined the Navy in the early 60s and went aboard the USS Keppler DD765 and left the service as a EM2/c

Note: We are very proud that our small 390' ship was distinguised by HNSA in 2006 and we congratulate Maury and Ed for their achievement.

4. We had many families working aboard KENNEDY during the past field day.  The Rositani father and son team(USS Fiske DD842), Mike Angelini and two sons (USS J.P. KENNEDY Jr. DD850), and the five members of the Levesque family who joined us representing the DD850 Sea Cadet Corp.

5.  If you miss the field day, you are missing a good time!  The ship and your shipmates need your support!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, I have more than likely missed a great deal of the work we have done.  Every detail, no matter how small, is much appreciated.  Thank you all again for joining our efforts.

Please consider helping KENNEDY in any manner you can..history and this ship depend on YOU.

Fair winds and following seas,
Rich Angelini
